Day Two hundred seventy-seven:

Katie & Dick walk their kids home from school…

This afternoon I got to spend some time with a friend and student Katie Dunlap who lives in the suburbs outside of Chicago.

Katie is the mother of four beautiful kids and she and her husband Dick live in a suburb that is more like a small town than a suburb of a major city.

People know their neighbors, they watch out for each other and a scene like this seems very commonplace to them (though I can’t tell you how affirming it was for me to witness).

This was the first time that I had met Dick in person and it was great to connect the person with the stories.

Katie does amazing work with her photographs and what makes it extra special is the way she presents her work.  She takes the presentation to a higher form — very tactile, very custom and very personal.

Seeing this scene though brought me back to the days of walking home while growing up in the midwest.  I’ve been away from it for so long that I had almost forgotten how it looks, especially on a warm early fall day like today.
